Uber isn't saying how many Canadians were affected by year-old hack

Uber Reveals 57 Million Users Drivers Hacked

According to Bloomberg, the hackers had users' personal information like names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million users around the world, as well as the personal info of seven million drivers, with over 600,000 driver's license numbers also stolen.

"Uber's announcement about a concealed data breach last October raises huge concerns around its data protection policies and ethics", said James Dipple-Johnson, the Deputy Commissioner at the Information Commissioner's Officer in an emailed statement.

As we can see in this chart from Statista, Uber's incident was unfortunate, but relatively low impact compared to others that have occurred over the past few years.

Khosrowshahi, who took over after former CEO Travis Kalanick resigned in June, said an internal investigation is being conducted into why the hack was kept secret for more than a year. Khosrowshahi said the company is now notifying regulatory authorities. This, compounding the seriousness of the breach and the potential repercussions if the PII is abused, suggest that the CEO's mea culpa is only the beginning of what could be a trying time for the company.

"While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes", Mr Khosrowshahi said.

"The truly scary thing here is that Uber paid a bribe, essentially a ransom to make this breach go away, and they acted as if they were above the law", Curry said. As of Wednesday, attorneys general in New York, Massachusetts and Missouri had announced investigations.

A board committee had investigated the breach and concluded that neither Mr Kalanick nor Salle Yoo, Uber's general counsel at the time, were involved in the cover-up, another person familiar with the issue said.

Businesses need to recognise that data breaches are a threat they face and they should be prepared to deal with them effectively to maintain customer trust, say security advisers.

Should we all just assume our data is lost?

Downing Street said the hack, which affected 57 million customers and drivers worldwide, had not been reported by the taxi-hailing firm. According to Uber, however, no Social Security numbers or trip location information were taken.

Under new data protection rules that come into force in the European Union next May, companies will have to identify and notify regulators of data breaches within 72 hours or face significantly increased penalties. In 2013, a hack of Yahoo impacted very single account - 3 billion in total. Retail giant target in May agreed to pay $18.5 million as part of a settlement over a 2013 data breach that left the information of 40 million credit and debit cards exposed.

This is the second time the company is known to have failed to report a significant breach, having been fined $20,000 in January 2017 for failing to disclose a considerably less serious breach in 2014, as reported by the BBC. SEC Chair Jay Clayton, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, was only made aware of the incident in August.

Uber's silence about its breach came while it was negotiating with the Federal Trade Commission about its handling of its riders' information.

As a result of the hack, the ride-share company now faces probes from multiple state attorneys general, as well as global regulators in Europe.
