Volvo to supply Uber with self-driving cars

Volvo and Uber expand tie-up in race to dominate self-driving cars

A confirmed report from an Uber spokesperson says that the company has just ordered around 24,000 Volvo XC90 SUVs for its line of the driverless fleet. Volvo must not of cared too much about that debacle, however, as Uber is now buying 24,000 XC90 SVUs from it to form new, large fleet of driverless vehicles. It would be the first of its kind. In Pittsburgh and Tempe, Arizona, Uber has been testing a self-driving Volvo prototype for a little over a year now, with safety drivers in the front seat ready to intervene if the program fails or stalls.

Monday's agreement represents one of the most concrete deals between two big players in the field for the production of a large number of real cars, which is making other auto manufacturers race to develop their own models of self-driving vehicles. It has retrofitted the test cars with sensors and autonomous driving hardware to enable them to drive on their own.

The cars, in theory, would be available through the Uber app to pick up passengers without a driver. The agreement calls for the company to supply the ride-hailing firm with base model vehicles that come from the factory with "core" autonomous driving technology installed. "This new agreement puts us on a path toward mass-produced, self-driving vehicles at scale", Uber's Jeff Miller told Bloomberg.

Uber announced the Volvo deal Monday, according to The New York Times.

SC women's basketball champions decline White House invite
"The only invitation we're thinking about", Staley said in a statement , "is to the 2018 N.C.A.A. tournament". Since 1983 , every NCAA women's basketball championship team has been invited to the White House.

Uber's Volvo deal is a reminder that it's far and away the biggest player in the ride hailing industry.

If you're thinking about making ends meet as an Uber driver that might not be a good long-term career option with the ride-hailing services moving quickly towards becoming a self-driving vehicle business.

Uber's Advanced Technologies Group is in charge of developing the driverless system, which will be incorporated into the vehicles between 2019 and 2021, Volvo confirmed.

"The issue is that we don't have any legislation in any city of the world that would remotely allow this sort of thing to happen at the moment", said Paul Newton, director at the consultancy IHS Automotive, about the idea of a totally driverless taxi service.
