White House backs Roy Moore in all but name

Eugene Robinson | The Washington Post

Scott said that it would be "in the best interest of the country, as well as the state of Alabama", for Moore to step aside, something the candidate's wife said at a rally on Friday that her husband would not do.

Alabama's biggest newspaper on Sunday urged voters to "Stand for decency, reject Roy Moore" in an editorial about the controversial Republican Senate candidate whose campaign has been engulfed by sexual assault allegations.

"I was expecting candlelight and roses, what I got was very different", she said. Darrel Nelson told Breitbart News that his stepmother's allegations are "one hundred percent a lie", adding, "I know for a fact that there is a lot that that woman does not tell the truth on. At 14, I was not able to make those kind of choices".

Corfman told The Washington Post earlier this month that in 1979, a 32-year-old Moore took off her "shirt and trousers and removed his clothes", touched her "over her bra and underpants" and "guided her hand to touch him over his underwear".

The editorial said the looming special election on 12 December - held to fill the vacancy in the Senate left by U.S. attorney general Jeff Sessions - was a chance for women to "make their voices heard in a state that has silenced them for too long".

Moore has denied all the allegations against him.

Corfman, however, maintained Monday that the Post "sought me out", "that she's "voted as a Republican for years and years" and that "this isn't political for me".

Asked if he would go to Alabama to campaign for Moore before the December 12 election, Trump responded, "I'll be letting you know next week".

Corfman noted that she told her family and friends about her meeting with Moore, and thought about confronting the judge later on - but she decided not too, thinking her children were too young.

She said she had been sitting with her mother on a bench awaiting a child custody hearing in her parents' divorce case.

Donald Trump tells troops 'we're really winning' in Thanksgiving message
We're fighting to win, and you people are really, you've turned it around over the last three to four months like nobody's seen. "They weren't letting you win", he said. "Our president brings more and more each day to us", he said.

"I didn't go looking for this, it fell in my lap", she said of deciding to make her story public.

In an interview with Savannah Guthrie, Corfman detailed her experience with Moore, who approached her outside an Alabama courthouse when he was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney.

Corfman denied receiving any compensation for telling her story, saying that, "if anything, this has cost me".

"And when she told me her name, I remembered". Moore, in turn, has accused McConnell of trying to "steal the election from the people of Alabama."

"Like most Americans the president believes we can not allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person's life".

"I wouldn't exactly call it a date", Corfman said, describing the encounter. "After arriving at his home on the second occasion that I went with him he basically laid out some blankets on the floor of his living room and proceeded to...seduce me, I guess you would say".

Moore has said the allegations that he systematically pursued relationships with teenage girls was an effort from the Senate's Republican leadership to undermine him.

In the coming days, Mr Moore allegedly picked up Ms Corfman around the corner from her home, and drove her to his house in the woods where he sexually assaulted her, the newspaper claims.

"Or, worse, we'll believe you but we just won't care".

In this case, the mall manager from 1981-1998, Barnes Boyle, told local TV station WBRC late last week that Moore was never banned from the mall.
