Why a tipple on a night out on the tiles raises spirits

Red wine is more associated with feeling relaxed

And 59 per cent of spirit drinkers reported feelings of confidence compared to 45 per cent of beer drinkers and just over a quarter of wine drinkers. This irresponsible headline was prompted by a survey of young people, which showed they associated different types of drink with different emotions. In the heaviest drinking group, over 60 percent reported feelings of aggression from drinking.

Researchers used an worldwide online survey of alcohol and drug use to investigate the emotions people aged 18 to 34 said they experienced when drinking spirits, beer, red wine or white wine.

Gin and other spirits are a more disturbing influence than beer and wine, says a study. "The experience of aggression among intimate partners within couples differs by gender and the involvement of alcohol, and count of aggressive acts in a population-based survey do not reflect the reality of gender differences".

RG: What emotions were most strongly associated with which types of alcohol? Other factors are likely to be involved.

Spirits were the least likely to be associated with feeling relaxed, with just 20 per cent saying it helped them to unwind.

Where did the story come from?

Results of the survey were published online November 21 in BMJ Open. No information was given about funding. Many headline-writers and reporters seized the opportunity to say the study confirmed urban myths, which wasn't the case. But quaffing the claret also appears to make 60 per cent feel exhausted.

The Mail Online suggested throughout its article that the type of alcohol has a direct effect on the emotions experienced.

The Guardian did point out limitations in the study and said that the reasons for emotions are likely to be "complex". The survey, in 11 languages, was promoted in 21 countries.

"They clearly lay out that sometimes people will use alcohol to regulate their emotions - not only negative emotions, but positive emotions as well", Krakower said.

"Such prices can encourage consumption at levels harmful to the health of the drinker and through violence and injuries also represent a risk to the people around them".

It is noteworthy that after drinking alcohol people often change their behavior, brain activity aktiviziruyutsya, and often after leaving feelings of intoxication, they do not remember what is happening. They were opportunistic sample, so are not meant to be fully representative of people in each country. But their feelings about alcohol varied by sex and drinking levels.

What were the basic results?

In fact, almost a third of respondents - 30 per cent - ticked the box linking spirits with feelings of aggression (compared to 7 per cent for red wine). British scientists have noted that men in a state of intoxication more in control of their emotions than women.

Men were significantly more likely than women to associate aggression with all types of alcohol.

How did the researchers interpret the results?

"Spirits are often consumed more quickly and contain much higher concentrations of alcohol". The team of researchers conducted an extensive analysis of how different alcohols can affect your emotions. They may also be less likely to be consumed with food than wine or beer.

Spirits have an even greater effect on self-esteem with 40 per cent of people who enjoy vodka, gin or rum claiming they felt sexier as a result.

Hard alcohol - like vodka, gin, and whiskey - can make you feel confident and sexy.

We've all got that one thing we don't ever drink because it makes us overly emotional, right? The emotional impact of drinking alcohol is another aspect to consider when thinking about not drinking to excess. "Someone who wants to relax might choose to have a beer or a glass of wine".
