6 killed, 22 people hospitalized in United States train derailment

Amtrak Train Derails On Overpass In Washington State, Causing 'Multiple Fatalities'

National Transportation Safety Board investigators were at the scene trying to determine the derailment's cause. The Washington State Department of Transportation says the Federal Railroad Administration funded and reviewed recent upgrades to the tracks. Konzelman said he and Hoverson got out of their auto to help the injured. A website that monitors locations and speeds of Amtrak trains, transitdocs.com, reported that the train was going about 81 miles per hour shortly before the derailment, The Associated Press reported. Authorities said there were three confirmed deaths. "As you can see by the large response, we have taken them out and people that were able to walk are under the tents being cared for by multiple groups", he said. The official said he had no new information to explain the discrepancy in the numbers.

Just after the train derailed, the conductor spoke with dispatch, in a conversation obtained by Broadcastify.com.

"I'm still figuring that out. A lot of them were screaming and moaning, but there was nothing we could do to help them really, so we just stayed with them, we held their hands, we talked to them, we rubbed their backs, tried to get them to just relax and try to be a comfortable as they could", he said.

The derailment was Amtrak's second in Washington state this year. "Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens" Anderson said.

The two eventually made their way to a train vehicle where he said it appeared people had died.

He called it a miracle an infant child he saw from the scene appeared completely unharmed.

Exit polls went wrong in Bihar elections, reminds Tejashwi Yadav
So the elections are also being seen as a test of popularity for PM Narendra Modi who extensively campaigned during the polls. The battle is nearly done with as the second phase of voting ended on Thursday, all eyes will be on the results now.

US President Donald Trump tweeted that the incident shows "more than ever" why his infrastructure plan "must be approved quickly". The accident happened on a newly completed bypass.

The train, which was carrying 78 passengers and five crew, was part of a newly expanded faster rail service along the route linking Seattle and Portland, Oregon - featuring new locomotives.

The train that derailed Monday during the morning rush hour left the track as it was about to cross over southbound lanes of I-5 near the south end of the bypass. Track testing began in January and February in advance of Monday's launch and continued through at least July, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Survivor Chris Karnes said the train had passed the city of DuPont when he heard "rocking and creaking".

The mayor of Lakewood, Washington, a city along the new route, predicted a deadly crash - but one involving a fast-moving train hitting a auto or pedestrian at a grade-crossing, not a train tumbling off an overpass.

"There was a huge impact on the side of the train, and I just went flying to the other end of the auto".
