Apple admits to slowing iPhones to preserve device and battery

Apple said it changed its software a year ago for the iPhone 6, 6S and SE to "smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed".

It slows your phone down if it has an old battery or if you're in a place with extremely cold temperatures. Apple's fix appears to be throttling the CPU to prevent the phone from randomly shutting down.

To address that, Apple's iOS software, starting with last year's iOS 10.2.1, included better power management capabilities, the company says.

There's conspiracy theorists jumping with joy today as Apple confirms they have software to throttle the performance of older iPhones which is being seen as the end of the world, but lets take a closer look at this.

The lawsuit has supposedly been filed by Stefan Bogdanovich, a Los Angeles man who is claiming that Apple's tactic of slowing down older iPhone models is making the lives of users who aren't willing to shell out the kind of cash needed for the newest devices hard.

Bogdanovich isn't the only one taking Apple to court over the iPhone slowdown.

Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson Will Sell Team Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Then on Friday, the Panthers said they had hired lawyers to look into accusations against Richardson, the team's founding owner. He announced plans to sell his principal stake after the team said it was investigating him for "workplace misconduct".

Apple has admitted to deliberately slowing down the operation of older phones to avoid them from shutting down unexpectedly.

Q: What has Apple said on the matter?

But the use of a relatively new phone model from a prominent supplier like Apple provides additional evidence of heightened competition among the wireless carriers, which have been frequently updating their offers in recent weeks. And millions of people have bought new phones for that very reason...

Apple said the problem stemmed from the fact that all lithium-ion batteries, not just those found in Apple products, degrade and have problems supplying the needed power as they age and accumulate charging cycles. Owners can also purchase a kit to replace the battery. Other users chimed in with similar reports, and the developer of the iPhone speed test tool Geekbench sifted through his data to show that the phenomenon was pretty widespread, and apparently connected to certain versions of iOS.

In a subsequent statement about the issue, Apple said, "Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. That is, your battery won't power your device as long on a given charge". Tech companies, including Apple.
