Apple Countersues Qualcomm Alleging Patent Infringement By Popular Snapdragon Processors

"Apple began seeking those patents years before Qualcomm began seeking the patents it asserts against Apple in this case", the company wrote in its complaint.

U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm filed three new patent infringement complaints against Apple, marking yet another development in a wide-ranging legal war between the two companies.

Qualcomm in July accused Apple of infringing several patents related to helping mobile phones get better battery life.

Specifically, Apple says that Qualcomm's now-dated Snapdragon 800 and 820 processors - used in a number of Android phones from the likes of Google and Samsung - infringe on these patents, but Qualcomm is the only firm named in the countersuit. Apple alleges it owns at least eight battery life patents that Qualcomm has violated. Apple made the obvious reply, denying the allegations and alleging that Qualcomm's patents were invalid anyway.

Apple is asking for damages from Qualcomm, but an actual number has not been specified. In that suit, Apple said Qualcomm's behavior was akin to "a common patent troll".

But with Samsung planning to make new Note phone to be foldable and making it available in 2018, it is still likely that Apple will not back down in the foldable smartphones race. In a connected case, Qualcomm charged the contract manufacturers that create Apple's devices, however Apple associated with the team to defend them.

In January, Apple sued Qualcomm for almost $1 billion in patent royalty rebates that Qualcomm allegedly withheld from Apple. Apple emailed Qualcomm to request "highly confidential" information about how its chips work on an unidentified wireless carrier's network, Qualcomm alleged, but Apple had copied an Intel engineer in the email for information.
