The South African Football Association (SAFA) on Saturday congratulated Liberian president-elect, George Weah on his recent victory in the country's elections.

Addressing supporters in Monrovia, Boakai promised to provide support to Weah, but he also reminded him of Liberia's fragile economy and the challenges that lie ahead.

Weah, a retired worldwide footballer and standard bearer of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) was declared victor on Friday after the Boxing Day run-off polls by Liberia's national electoral commission.

The results were almost identical to those announced on Thursday evening by the commission after 98 percent of returns.

Immediately after NEC chairman Jerome Korkoya read the final results, Weah's party headquarters erupted into celebration. The election marks Liberia's first democratic transition of power in over 70 years as the country continues to grapple with the legacy of two back-to-back civil wars between 1989-2003, during which an estimated 250,000 people were killed.

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the ex-star striker's victory in a tweet on Friday.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan who worked with Weah before, during and after the 2010 FIFA World Cup said he was elated for this historic moment.

"I refuse to subject our nation to such an experience", he said.

"I think the Liberian people will expect..."

He is set to take office in January.

Though voter turnout for Tuesday's runoff was low, Weah drew support from the younger generation, which makes up a majority of Liberia's population of 4.6 million people.

Weah was expected to deliver a victory speech to supporters and the country, but it was canceled.

The commission said 56 percent of the country's 2.2 million registered voters cast ballots in the runoff, which was contested twice in court amid claims of irregularities, with its original November 7 date delayed. The United Nations has helped to oversee past votes. "Change is on", Weah posted on Twitter.

The president-elect is popular among the country's youth, who are confident that he will represent their interests better than his predecessor.

Weah also ran in the country's last two elections, winning the first round of the 2005 vote that eventually went to Sirleaf. "He is King George!"

He was born in a slum of the capital, Monrovia, and showed early promise in soccer.

Weah, 51, who starred in top-flight football at Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan in the 1990s and briefly at Chelsea and Manchester City before entering politics in 2002, won 61.5 percent of the ballot, taking 14 of Liberia's 15 counties.

Information for this article was contributed by Carley Petesch of The Associated Press.

Weah's critics have argued that his lack of political experience makes him unequipped for Liberia's top job.
