Facebook using facial recognition to find photos you're not tagged in

Facebook announced that it will start using its facial recognition technology to find photos of you across its site, even if you aren't tagged in those photos. The exception to this rule, however, is if someone uploads a photo of you as their profile picture. We always respect the privacy setting people select when posting a photo on Facebook (whether that's friends, public or a custom audience), so you won't receive a notification if you're not in the audience. The alerts make it easier for users to tag themselves if they like the photo, but they also allow users to contact the uploader of the photo if they have a problem with it. Facebook said the new feature can also protect users from online impersonators by spotting people who are attempting to use the same profile picture.

Joaquin Quiñonero Candela, director of applied machine learning at Facebook, notes that if you are in a photo and are part of the audience for the post, you'll now be notified, even if you haven't been tagged.

Facebook is also using facial recognition to create new tools for those with visual impairments.

You won't be granted the same level of control over this feature as you get with Facebook's labyrinthine privacy settings, though, as the option merely comes with a "simple on/off switch" that will shut down the whole feature. When a new photo or video shows up on Facebook, it is compared to the template to determine who it is.

Geminids 2017: Can you still see them tonight?
The bright object could be seen from various parts of the metro, but most calls came from the west side of town. Its unusual orbit will see it pass closer to the sun than any other named asteroid.

We are introducing these new features in most places, except in Canada and the European Union where we don't now offer face recognition technology.

Facebook jumped ahead of potential privacy fears today with another of its Hard Questions posts, addressing some of the concerns users might have over the social network's growing use of facial recognition technology.

While now able to identify most users in head-on photos, the technology won't recognise people whose faces are obscured, in shadow or at unusual angles.

In addition to improved identity management, Facebook is also introducing a way for people who are visually impaired to know more about who is in the photos they encounter on Facebook. The idea is to prevent people from impersonating others on the social network.
