Google Plans Fire TV YouTube Ban

YouTube is cutting access to Amazon's FireTV and Echo Show CNET

A tit for tat between the two tech giants just reached a new level, with Google announcing Wednesday it is restricting YouTube access on Amazon products, since Amazon doesn't sell Google's products.

The latest bout began when Google removed their popular YouTube video channel from Amazon's Fire TV, their $70 TV device that connects to a variety of video services, such as Amazon Prime video, Hulu, ESPN, and Netflix. YouTube was supposed to disappear from the Echo Show Tuesday, although Amazon has previously found ways to make unauthorized versions of YouTube available on that device.

Fire TV will lose YouTube on New Year's Day, while the app has already been blocked on Echo Show.

GOOGLE says it will block users from accessing YouTube on some of Amazon's best-selling devices... unless Amazon starts selling Google's products.

However, its reasons for blocking Prime Video from casting, and for taking down Nest products (owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc.) from sale, are less clear. Google, coincidently, makes a competitive line of smart speakers, called Google Home, which, also coincidently, was banned from the Amazon site. Not only the removal of Nest's products, but Google is also miffed over Amazon's continued ignorance of Google Home or Chromecast.

Google has made a decision to cripple the Fire TV and Echo devices because Amazon refuses to sell Google's competing products - the Chromecast video and audio-streaming dongle and the Google Home smart speaker - as well as Google's Nest-branded smart home devices including internet-connected thermostats and home security systems. As for the Amazon Fire TV, the version of YouTube on that device will only work until January 1, 2018. "We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible".

While each company can expect to see a financial hit, it's the customers who will suffer, including the millions of current Fire TV users.

IDF Retaliates with Tank Fire for Gaza Rockets; No Injuries
Both Israelis and Palestinians lay claim to Jerusalem , although Israel has retained control over the city since 1967. On Thursday, Hamas terror group leader Ismail Haniyeh called for a new Palestinian intifada , or uprising.

'We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services, ' the firm said.

"Echo Show and Fire TV now display a standard web view of YouTube.com and point customers directly to YouTube's existing website", a company spokeswoman said.

Amazon did not immediately respond when asked if Apple TV will return to Amazon's online store now that it supports Amazon Prime. Just to rub it in, these products are created to work with Alexa, Amazon's smart assistant.

The move is undoubtedly a huge blow for Amazon but we hope that the situation can eventually be resolved.

Google pulls YouTube support from Amazon's Echo Show and Fire TV. YouTube returned to the Show last month, just in time for Black Friday, but Google is again cutting access.

"Through our collaboration with Google, we are expanding our Omnichannel efforts to go beyond stores and online to in-home".
