Hurricane Harvey Recovery: Strength and resilience after the storm

2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Wraps Today

For the first time on record, three Category 4 hurricanes made landfall in the U.S.: Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Future updates continued to increase levels of activity predicted in 2017, calling for 15 named storms, eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes on July 5, and 16 named storms, eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes on August 4.

Finally, there was Rina, a storm that only reached tropical storm status in early November, remaining over the open Atlantic waters. Those records date back to 1851. Rina was one of 17 names storms for the basin. It's only the second season to include two hurricanes making landfall at that intensity. "It was a very active year in which almost every portion of the Gulf Coast was impacted by at least tropical storm winds at some point".

On October 8th, Hurricane Nate made landfall as a category one storm near Biloxi, MS.

Irma will be most remembered for its terrible toll in the Caribbean, utterly destroying the island of Barbuda, shredding sections of the Virgin Islands and then knocking out power to much of Florida.

The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season may be a wrap, but it's not going to be forgotten anytime soon.

With winds reaching up to 185 miles per hour, Hurricane Irma was the second-strongest hurricane in the Atlantic Basin in history.

-First Cat4 to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1932.

A total of 438 lives were lost during the 2017 season. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria were all strong category 4 storms. Ophelia is the the strongest hurricane on record to track so far north and slammed into Ireland as a post-tropical cyclone.

The season saw two category 4 hurricanes - Harvey and Irma - make landfall on the continental US, the first such occurrence, he said, since records started being kept in 1851.

At its strongest, Maria's winds reached 175 miles per hour.

In addition, the tropical Atlantic Ocean was much warmer than average. The usual lineup of tropical waves marching off Africa were quick to take full advantage of these hurricane-enhancing conditions as soon as they entered the region. A quick look at the National Hurricane Center's forecast shows calm seas in the Atlantic - and severe weather is not expected to churn the waters again until next summer.

The record-breaking season saw the most activity in the Atlantic since 2005, with 17 named storms. If any other storms form during 2017, the next name on the list is Sean.

"From a scientific perspective, the barometric pressure from both Irma and Maria were the lowest ever recorded; as 915 and 908 millibars, respectively".

Rainfall in Port Arthur, Texas, broke records; more than two feet of rain fell in 24 hours.
