Earlier in the day, Israel troops were heavily deployed on the outskirts of Gaza city in anticipation of any possible protests by Palestinians.

Protests broke out in Gaza and the West Bank and Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump made a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Trump's announcement, which was warmly received by Israel, overturns decades of precedent and runs counter to global consensus, with no other country now taking the same stance. The protesters also clashed with Israeli security forces firing tear gas and stun grenades, as well as rubber bullets and live ammunition. On Thursday, Hamas terror group leader Ismail Haniyeh called for a new Palestinian intifada, or uprising.

Both Israelis and Palestinians lay claim to Jerusalem, although Israel has retained control over the city since 1967.
