Princess Michael of Kent, who is married to the queen's first cousin, was criticized for wearing a blackamoor brooch in front of Meghan Markle, Prince Harry's fiancé, during a Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace Wednesday.

The engagement marked the first official family gathering attended by Prince Harry's mixed race fiancée Meghan Markle and the first time she was to meet Princess Michael. "Princess Michael is distressed & very sorry that it has caused offence", a spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

It's unclear whether the princess wore the brooch to intentionally make an offensive statement, or whether it was a clueless decision wear the tone-deaf accessory.

Plenty of people are unhappy with a member of the Royal Family, and no, it's not the bride-to-be. Hopefully, the rest of her experience wasn't as eyebrow-raising as it must have been when she met with Princess Michael. "Really? #MeghanMarkle offically meets the family and is greeted by THIS? #racism #BritishRoyals" said one person in disbelief.

Queen Elizabeth's 33-year-old grandson, Harry, fifth-in-line to the throne, and Markle, who stars in the US TV legal drama Suits, announced their engagement last month.

"I even pretended years ago to be an African, a half-caste African, but because of my light eyes I did not get away with it, but I dyed my hair black", she told ITV.

The American TV actress and a divorcee penned an essay for Elle UK in 2016, where she addressed the issue, saying: "To describe something as being black and white means it is clearly defined".

I did not say 'back to the colonies.' I said 'you should remember the colonies.

"I knew it was coming, I always do".

"I travelled on African buses".

This isn't the first time Princess Michael of Kent was accused of racial insensitivity, either. The publication also notes that this is not the Princess' first offence in the race department, she allegedly told a group of Black diners in NY to "go back to the colonies" in the year 2004. I wanted to be a writer.

"Blackamoor" is defined as the style of 18th century artwork in which black men and women are depicted as dark-skinned African slaves. The items of jewellery are valued at £10,000 or more.
