Ravens' Jimmy Smith Financially Wise To Drop Suspension Appeal After Achilles Tear

Report: Ravens CB Jimmy Smith Suspended Four Games for PED Violation

Today, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Smith tested positive for a still unknown performance enhancing drug, and that the NFL has given the Ravens corner a four-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy.

Smith reportedly knew of his suspension last week and was planning to appeal, but will withdraw that appeal and serve the suspension while he is out for the year with an injury. The suspension will ultimately cost him $182,352, though it's less than the $2 million he would have lost had he restructured his deal with Baltimore in August.

Smith, the Ravens' top player in the secondary despite dealing with an Achilles injury for most of the season, was injured in the second quarter Sunday when he fell to the ground while trying to cover a deep route.

Canady has played in eight games as a Raven.

Smith tore his left Achilles tendon in Sunday's 44-20 victory over Detroit.

Nebraska reportedly hiring UCF's Scott Frost as new head coach
When asked about interest from Nebraska, Frost replied , "I'd be hurt if Nebraska wasn't interested in me". Right now, the Knights are focused on taking care of business and winning a conference championship.

Injuries have consistently hampered Smith's career. Smith started the Ravens' first 12 games this season and was tied for second on the team with three interceptions. Second-year running back Kenneth Dixon was suspended for the first four games of the season, but suffered a season-ending meniscus injury before the season began.

It was not a very good weekend for Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith.

Smith, and the team likely, as well, were already aware of the pending suspension, as Gilbert and the Steelers were before it was announced, but it came out at that time because the cornerback chose to drop his appeal. Now, the Ravens are riding a three-game win streak — their longest of the season — and holding down the final seed in the AFC playoff picture.

The Ravens (7-5) are now chasing the Pittsburgh Steelers (9-2) in the AFC North.
