Singapore Airlines Decides to Reroute Flights as Measure against N. Korea Missiles

Three chees North Korean leader Kim Jong Un celebrates after giving an order to test-fire the newly developed inter-continental ballistic rocket Hwasong-15

North Korea's rocket test in September reportedly also led Scandinavian and Swiss Airlines to re-route their flights into Japan. The new route avoided the northern part of the Sea of Japan, the spokesperson said.

No one flies over North Korean airspace, but the area around it is quite busy.

North Korea launched an ICBM last week that was witnessed by a passenger plane's flight crew.

The airlines confirmed that crew of the CX893 flight has reported the suspected sighting of the missile - which Pyongyang said can hit targets "everywhere in the world" - when they were mid-flight.

The Senate has already passed the bill without amendments and the House of Representatives is expected to do the same later today. Russell Broadbent, Keith Pitt , David Littleproud, and Bob Katter were the only MPs to vote against the bill.

The Hong Kong based airline sent out a staff note earlier this week sharing the communications from the cockpit, with the crew saying "we witnessed the DPRK missile blow up and fall apart near our current location". "We remain alert and [will] review the situation as it evolves". The flights, one from San Francisco and the other from Los Angeles, were both headed for Incheon, the main airport serving Seoul, South Korea.

Korean Air said the pilots on two of its flights bound for Seoul "saw a flash and everyone is assuming it should be the missile because of the timing".

While tensions around the world about the possibility of the escalation of conflict in the Korean peninsula is pretty widespread, the ongoing missile tests by the North Korea regime is even more worrying for carriers conducting service across the North Pacific region. The chances are "billions to one", aviation safety analyst David Soucie told CNN. North Korea likely chooses splashdown points for each stage that avoid airline routes, said Vipin Narang, an expert on nuclear strategy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "That would still be low probability but more risky".
