STORM ALERT The Met Office has put in place severe weather warnings across the UK for Thursday

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Northern Ireland, with Storm Caroline expected to brings snow, ice and winds of up to 70mph.

"A spell of heavy snow is possible over some central parts of the United Kingdom during Sunday", reports the Met Office.

Motorists are being warned of potential disruption, as a band of snow looks set to sweep across Cumbria - with a second warning already issued for the weekend.

'At the moment we have a yellow weather warning in place, but it could be upgraded to amber'.

The Met Office has a yellow "be aware" warning in force from 00:05 GMT on Friday to 18:00 on Saturday.

Forecasting snow showers in the United Kingdom can be quite challenging as conditions are often borderline between rain and snow.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: "Wednesday will see the last of the mild days, with temperatures in double figures, between 10 and 12 degrees (50F-54F)".

In a yellow warning, the forecaster said: "Gusts of 60-70 miles per hour are expected quite widely, with gusts to 80 miles per hour possible near north facing mainland coasts and across the Isles".

Disruption to travel is likely, with rail and ferry cancellations possible.

"Rural communities with limited access routes could become cut off".

Northern Ireland, Wales and central parts of the UK can expect snow throughout Sunday, according to UK Snow Updates, while London will get some of the white stuff on Monday.

Across the United Kingdom, conditions will start to turn wet and blustery overnight, especially across the North and North West, with strong winds expected early on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann also said that snow can be expected on Thursday and Friday in the west and northwest, especially on hills and mountains.

"During winter weather which brings snow showers, it is not uncommon for snow amounts to vary considerably across short distances", said the Chief Forecaster.
