Venus Williams Won't Face Charges in Fatal Crash

Venus Williams fatal crash: No one is to blame, police say

Both Williams and Barson, were not injured but Barson's husband, Jerome, died 13 days after the smash.

Barson's wife Linda, 68, had been driving the 2016 Hyundai Accent that T-boned the tennis pro's SUV at 40 miles per hour as she waited at an intersection in Palm Beach Gardens. His wife suffered a broken arm and other injuries.

They found that neither Barson nor Williams had violated the other's right of way.

After the initial police report was made public, Malcolm Cunningham, Williams' attorney released a statement, saying, "Ms. Williams entered the intersection on a green light".

"Based on the evidence obtained in the ongoing investigation, it has been determined the vehicle driven by Venus Williams lawfully entered the intersection on a circular green traffic signal, and attempted to travel north through the intersection to Ballen Isles Drive", the statement read, per the Palm Beach Post's Sarah Peters. As she started to cross, a dark sedan had cut her off, forcing her to stop.

After the sedan cleared the way, Williams began moving forward putting her in the path of the Barsons, who now had the light.

Tennis champ and goddess-on-earth Serena Williams has had quite an eventful year, having given birth to her first child in September and then tying the knot with her love Alexis Ohanian at a star-studded fairytale wedding a couple of months later.

In a police report released shortly after the accident, it was indicated that Williams had been deemed "at fault" in the fatal accident.

Police had initially said Williams was being held responsible for "violating the right of way of [the other driver]".

Williams broke down when quizzed about the crash during a Wimbledon press conference last summer.

Barson's daughter, Audrey Gassner-Dunayer, has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion.
