Airbus says to scrap A380 programme if no new orders

Boeing’s European rival Airbus reports its 2017 tally of aircraft sales and jet deliveries on Monday

Paris: Airbus said on Monday it would stop making the costly A380 superjumbo if it can't strike a long-term deal with Emirates for a steady supply of the planes.

'Quite honestly, if we can't work out a deal with Emirates there is no choice but to shut down the programme, ' Leahy said.

"The record-setting performance is a testament to our employees and supplier partners who continue to innovate new ways to design, build and deliver the most fuel-efficient airplanes to customers around the world", said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & CEO Kevin McAllister.

From 2020 it would be possible to keep the program running with an acceptable industrial result at a minimum rate of six aircraft per year.

Emirates is the largest operator of A380s globally with 100 A380s in operation and 42 more on order. The total topped the 912 commercial plane orders reported by US aerospace giant Boeing and made Airbus the victor in the rivals' annual order contest for a fifth consecutive year.

Airbus sees "great potential" for the Middle East aviation market in 2018, Mr Leahy told reporters.

Aziz Ansari Has Been Accused of Sexual Misconduct

All major domestic carriers with the exception of no- frills SpiceJet are either only Airbus planes or have the a mix of both Airbus and Boeing planes in their fleet.

Airbus shares were trading lower, Monday, despite the news that the plane maker had delivered the most planes on record and also pulled in more new orders than its rival Boeing.

"But I'm hopeful that we work out a deal with Emirates", he added.

Bregier, who's being replaced next month by Guillaume Faury as Airbus overhauls its top management, acknowledged "challenges" lie ahead but called them "manageable".

Known as the "superjumbo", it was launched in 2007 as the world's largest commercial aircraft, with a two-decked interior and a variety of onboard facilities including a bar, lounge, dutyfree shop and beauty salons.

Airbus is facing multiple corruption investigations, notably in Britain, France and Austria.
