Alligators get a nose up on icy conditions

Video shows alligators surviving frigid, freezing North Carolina water by keeping their nostrils in the air

The Shallotte River Park Swamp posted a series of videos to YouTube recently to show how the reptiles survive is such cold temperatures.

"When alligators aren't sunbathing, they'll spend the other half of their life in water".

The video shows several of the alligators sticking their noses through the icy cover of the water. 'Pretty incredible. ... Look at those teeth.

"They didn't care. They're just doing their thing", said Howard.

If the alligators didn't keep their snouts above the water surface, they'd perish in about 24 hours ― the maximum amount of time they can stay underwater without coming up for air.

They stick their mouths out of the water and allow the water to freeze around them. On this, the park has said in reference to experts that crocodiles get the feel of the changes in the weather. "I can't imagine it being very good for them if it was much over a week in cold water". Once it becomes warm and the ice melts, the creatures thermoregulate their body temperatures to their regular state.

The video has more than 200,000 views since the swamp park posted the video of the frozen alligators on Facebook on Sunday. 'They are trying to conserve energy to maintain body temperature'.

Alligators in southeastern North Carolina poke their noses through ice to survive unusual winter chills battering east coast of the United States since last week.
