Death toll in terrorist attack in Kabul rises to 20 people

Afghan Taliban in Nangarhar

Security sources in the area had earlier said that 20 people have been killed and more than 20 others have sustained injuries in the attack.

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of eastern Nangarhar province, told Anadolu Agency that the attack took place on the outskirts of Jalalabad city in Muqam Khan neighborhood, where the locals had gathered for the funeral prayers of a district governor in the afternoon.

President Ashraf Ghani late on January 4 called the attack "inhumane" and against the tenets of Islam.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

According to witnesses, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive while a confrontation between civilians and police forces was going on.

The capital has become one of the deadliest places in war-torn Afghanistan for civilians in recent months, as the Taliban step up attacks and Isis seeks to expand its presence in the country. No group has yet claimed that attack.

Several days ago a suicide bomber killed more than 40 people at a Shi'ite cultural centre in the capital.

US forces led an invasion to drive Taliban extremists from power after Al-Qaeda militants whose leaders were sheltering in Afghanistan carried out the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
