Deputy in Washington dies after being shot by burglary suspects

Massive manhunt for gunman after Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed

The deputy suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

McCartney, a three year veteran of the sheriff's office and a Navy veteran, was shot Sunday evening while responding to a burglary in Frederickson, Washington.

Police closed off roads in the area and conducted a manhunt in an area that includes industrial sites as well as wooded areas, asking local residents to stay indoors, but did not find the man. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie. McCartney was responding to a 9-1-1 call about an intruder at a home on 200th Street East.

Troyer said the fugitive is unsafe and advised residents in the area to stay inside.

The sheriff's office asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, and a nearby school district canceled classes in what it described as an abundance of caution. His family members and dozens of law enforcement officers gathered at the hospital to say goodbye, The News Tribune newspaper reported.

McCartney, who enlisted in the Navy on September 10, 2002, was an electronics technician 2nd class (E-5).

McCartney served on the USS Abraham Lincoln from February 25, 2004, through October 6, 2008.

Much of the Yelm community mourns the passing of McCartney as he was an active member and coach at CrossFit in Yelm.

McCartney was married and had three young sons, according to KOMO-TV. "So I'm lifting this family up to God, the most high and remembering the smiles that Daniel gave to all of us".
