Facebook's big newsfeed rethink: 5 key lessons for brands

Facebook to favor ‘trustworthy’ news sources – Zuckerberg

Facebook is rolling out a major change to its News Feed: pushing up news articles that come from "high quality" sources, and pushing down the others.

As the algorithmic change took its effect, Facebook News Feeds are now being filled with friendly updates about people's lives and less to no news or even controversy.

Facebook announced last week that it would try to have users see fewer posts from publishers, businesses and celebrities, and more from friends and family.

And that interpretation still appears to be true.

Facebook is also wanting more people to use the "Watch" tab to see video from shows they follow. Rather, Facebook is surveying its users on what sources are trusted.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that social media sites such as his can contribute to "sensationalism, misinformation and polarization. and if we don't specifically tackle these problems, then we end up amplifying them". That data will influence what others see in their news feeds.

The company said it would ask its more than 2 billion users to rank the news organizations they trusted in order to prioritize "high-quality news" over less trusted sources.

52 dead after bus catches fire in Kazakhstan
The country's Emergencies Ministry said the fire occured in the northern Aktobe region, leaving 52 dead. Horrific pictures and video show the inferno from which only five people escaped alive.

Accord to the publication, countries where Facebook as fiddling with its News Feeds have seen a spike in consumption of Fake News by basically reducing the presence of legitimate journalistic publications.

That led to concerns Facebook would be marginalizing mainstream news operations.

"We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us". That's a seriously risky move. The new scoring system is only rolling out in the U.S.to start, but the company plans to eventually expand it globally.

Starting Monday, the company will roll out more surveys to more users, asking them to share their thoughts on various media sources. Publications that do not score highly as trusted by the community may see a decrease. After all, it's safe to assume that some of these users are the same folks responsible for routinely making fake news spread more virally across the site than real news.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg is fighting for changes to US immigration policy - and encouraging those on Facebook to call their congressional leaders to do the same. On Friday, Zuckerberg said he expects news to make up roughly 4% of the news feed, down from roughly 5% today. Updated 1:49 p.m. PT: Added background about false news efforts.

The trust ranking will help to address fake news stories, said David Chavern, president of the News Media Alliance, a trade group for old-line United States newspapers.

How Facebook will navigate this is unclear.
