Google Implements Stricter Criteria for YouTube Monetization

YouTube Increases its Minimum Thresholds for Earning Revenue

Prompted by recent scandals involving offensive videos appearing on the platform, the company announced a series of changes including a pledge to have every video in its "Google Preferred" program approved by a human. They will also be implementing a "three-tier suitability system" so that advertisers have more choices on the type of videos they want their ads to be played on. But issues carried on.

The changes, created to improve "compliance with advertiser-friendly guidelines", also require that posters have 1,000 subscribers and generate 4,000 hours of "watchtime" over a year before they can benefit from ad revenue.

Under the old requirements, a channel needed 10,000 lifetime views to be included in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). YouTube will manually review these videos as they see fit, so no action is required by the owner of the copyrighted content. In addition, YouTube will also review violations of community guidelines against each channel which applies for the YPP.

The biggest online video streaming website in the world is now under fire from advertisers, who, in the wake of vlogger Logan Paul's shocking suicide forest video, have growing concerns regarding the type of endorsers their products are being tied with through advertisements. "In 2018, a major focus for everyone at YouTube is protecting our creator ecosystem and ensuring your revenue is more stable". It is a lot more hard for small creators to make the threshold into Google Preferred, and they are pissed. In response, YouTube announced on January 10 that Paul would be removed from Google Preferred and all his YouTube Red projects were put on hold indefinitely. Those affected are likely to be those making less than $100 on the program each year.

Paul was hit with massive criticism earlier this year due to a now-deleted video taken in the Aokigahara park in Japan where he continued filming an apparent suicide case found in the area. Google is also now in beta with Integral Ad Science to create a third-party brand safety reporting tool for YouTube.

The changes for YouTube creators suggest Google is bowing to pressure from the general public and advertisers following a string of incidences over the past year when videos were called out for content that is fake or otherwise distasteful, leading some advertisers to cut their YouTube budgets.
