GOP senators urge criminal probe of Trump dossier author

"In any event, it's up to the Justice Department to figure that out".

"After reviewing how Mr. Steele conducted himself in distributing information contained in the dossier and how many stop signs the DOJ ignored in its use of the dossier, I believe that a special counsel needs to review this matter", Graham, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said in the statement.

Two senior Republican U.S. Senators on Friday called for a criminal investigation into the former British spy who compiled a "dossier" in 2016 of allegations of financial and personal links between then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, his advisers and Russian Federation.

The Intelligence Committee has attempted to slap contempt citations on the department and the FBI for its investigation into claims of Russian collusion in the dossier.

The potential felony was referred to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Christopher Wray, along with corroborating documents. On Friday, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said the department had received the referral and will review it.

The dossier, which began as an opposition research effort and became publicly known in early 2017, details Russian interference in the 2016 election and includes allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Trump. Trump has called the dossier "phony" and derided it as a politically motivated hit job, and many Republicans in Congress have been focused on discrediting it.

Republicans have been asking the Justice Department for months whether the dossier was used as part of its initial investigation into Russian interference.

The FBI has reopened its absurd investigation of the Clinton Foundation.

The Judiciary Committee probe is one of three congressional investigations into Russian interference into the U.S. election, and is separate from Robert Mueller's probe. "The rule of Law depends on the government and all who work on its behalf playing by the rules themselves".

The minority leader of the Judiciary Committee, Sen. It was not immediately clear from the referral what Steele allegedly lied to investigators about.

The bipartisan split in the congressional investigations has seen Republicans seeking to undermine the credibility of Steele and the firm that hired him to produce the dossier, Fusion GPS.

The Judiciary Committee has not interviewed Steele.

Simpson has testified before three congressional committees - albeit behind closed doors - and has explained how his clients, the Washington Free Beacon and the Clinton campaign, came to hire Fusion GPS, setting off the private investigation into the Trump campaign.

"After a year of investigations into Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation, the only person Republicans seek to accuse of wrongdoing is one who reported on these matters to law enforcement in the first place", said Joshua A. Levy, counsel for Fusion GPS. "We should all be sceptical in the extreme".

"I don't take lightly making a referral for criminal investigation".
