HP recalls battery packs due to burn, fire hazards

HP has announced a recall on batteries in select notebook and mobile workstations sold in recent years.

Health Canada reports that HP Inc.

These batteries have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers.

The recalled batteries, which were manufactured in China, were sold from December 2015 until last month in various retail stores and online.

New Year Brings Record Cold Temperatures
Temperatures drop down into the low teens tonight but winds at 10-15 miles per hour will make it feel like the negatives. Once again, look for highs in the upper teens to round out the work week with the chance for a few snowflakes Thursday .

Fortunately, there is an easy way for users to determine whether they have been affected - HP has set up a webpage where customers can check to see whether their battery is included in the recall. In each case, the batteries could have been sold as part of the notebooks, or as replacements.

The company has also received three reports of property damage, totaling $4,500 with one report of a minor injury involving a first degree burn to the hand.

HP will provide consumers with a free battery replacement service by an authorized technician.

HP issued a statement to stay: "The quality and safety of all HP products is our top priority". HP is also providing a BIOS update that places the battery in "Battery Safety Mode" so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adapter. When enabled on an affected system, the battery will be discharged and then can't be charged (at least without disabling the safety mode). We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries. No one wants a repeat of the Galaxy Note 7 debacle.
