Kenya officials shut down TV coverage of opposition leader's 'swearing in'

NASA principal Raila Odinga is sworn-in as the people's president at Uhuru Park in Nairobi surrounded by lawyers Miguna Miguna Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang and Siaya senator James Orengo

Meanwhile Kenyan authorities shut down private radio and television stations this morning after warning that those who broadcast the ceremony would have their licences revoked.

The opposition successfully challenged the August election in court, claiming vote-rigging, but boycotted a fresh election in October, claiming a lack of electoral reforms.

"It has come to our attention that the Jubilee administration intimidated senior media managers not to air live National Super Alliance (Nasa) ceremony at Uhuru Park during which Raila Odinga and Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka were expected to "take oath of office".

President Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term last November.

"The lesson for African leaders as a whole is that, Kenyatta did not send Police to disrupt the proceedings at Odinga's swearing-in". Property of members of organized criminal groups can be seized.

The attorney general of Kenya said Odinga could be charged with treason, a crime that can carry the death penalty, reported Reuters news agency.

A tweet by D I K E M B E said that the swearing in of Raila Odinga was no longer about Raila Odinga.

Trump condemns Kabul car bomb attack
This came after President Donald Trump said on twitter Saturday that "we will not allow the Taliban to win". The explosion happened in a busy part of the city where the High Peace Council has offices.

Odinga became the first opposition leader to be sworn in as "parallel president" in post-independence Kenya, hence massive anxiety on the outcome of an exercise that was labeled illegal by the government.

Holding a bible in his right hand at a park in Nairobi, Mr Odinga is said to have declared that he was answering to a "high [er] calling to assume the office of the people's president of the Republic of Kenya".

Kaikai, the Editors Guild chairman, issued a statement denouncing the meeting, which he called a "brazen threat" that was "intended to intimidate the media from performing its rightful role of informing the public on matters affecting them". She warned that electoral commissioners and staff faced political intimidation and lived in fear they would be killed.

NTV Kenya has been shut down by the Communications authority while airing proceedings at Uhuru Park where the opposition Nasa swearing in is.

After the Supreme Court decision to annul the August election, Kenyatta called the judges "crooks", accused them of stealing the election and vowed to "fix" them.

Speaking to the media after leaving his Karen house ahead of the oath plan today, Wiper leader Kalonzo decried the "tactical police withdrawal" saying the State was out to frustrate all activities in the Opposition coalition.

Swearing-in main opposition leader, Raila Odinga as President of Kenya could lead to a possible mayhem, Chief Executive Officer of Irbard Security Consult, has predicted.
