PEI unemployment rate hits 40-year low

Canada's Unemployment Rate Hits Record Low

"Given the tremendous progress made in narrowing labour market slack - an area highlighted by the Bank of Canada in recent communication - we think that today's report is enough to push" Governor Stephen Poloz to raise rates on January 17, CIBC economist Nick Exarhos said in a note to investors.

Expectations that Canada's central bank will boost interest rates later this month for the third time since July surged on Friday as the government reported jobs data significantly above analysts' expectations.

TORONTO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - The Canadian dollar strengthened to a three-month high against its USA counterpart on Friday after stronger-than-expected domestic jobs data boosted expectations for a Bank of Canada interest rate hike this month. All of these gains were in full-time work, while part-time employment ended the year down by 11.5 per cent. The jobless rate in Windsor fell to 6.1 per cent from 6.3 per cent, with an increase in employment and labour force.

The Hub City's employed workforce grew from 80,000 in November to 80,600 in December, and its unemployment rate fell from 6.3 per cent to 5.7 per cent.

Several analysts said Friday's solid labour report might be enough to encourage Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz to introduce another interest-rate hike later this month.
