Sushi lover pulls live 5-foot tapeworm out of his body

Sushi lover finds 5ft tapeworm dangling from his rectum and yanks it out himself

A California man pulled a 5-foot-6-inch tapeworm out of his body following a steady diet of salmon sushi, his doctor said. Bahn recalled how the patient said he felt the worm "wiggling out" and felt like "his guts were coming out" as he sat on the toilet.

The incident was related by Dr. Kenny Banh in the January 8 episode of "This Won't Hurt A Bit", a podcast that discusses unusual health cases with medical experts, NPR reports.

Dr. William Schaffner, professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said that the Japanese tapeworm is from the same family of other tapeworms, presenting similar symptoms of abdominal discomfort, nausea, loose stools and weight loss, among others.

While Banh and the man tried to figure out what would have caused such a massive tapeworm, the man admitted he eats salmon sashimi, every day. Last February, the CDC warned consumers about the risk of tapeworms in salmon caught in Alaska.

Banh tells that he doesn't give any sign of cramping but tells that he wants to get treated for worms. The tapeworm had a flat, skinny body, tan in color, with narrow, dark brown lines down its back and "a big, flat head".

According to the CDC, such tapeworms can grow up to 30 feet in length.

The man said he ate raw fish, especially salmon sashimi, nearly every day.

Last January, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put out a warning of an elevated risk of parasitic larvae that can grow into tapeworms being found in Pacific Ocean salmon, including Alaskan wild salmon that is popular in the United States and elsewhere.

When it comes to raw fish, however, the best way to kill parasites is freezing. Complications include intestinal obstruction and gall bladder disease. A single dose of de-worming medication - the exact same pill given to dogs - is all it takes to kill all the worms. Whenever inquired as to whether he'll continue eating sushi, Banh said he would, yet just not the salmon.
