Two injured in Stockholm metro blast

One man died after an explosion outside an underground station in Stockholm on Sunday, police said, adding they did not believe the incident was terrorism-related.

According to local media, a 60-year-old man is critical condition, because the device exploded in his hands as he lifted it from the ground.

The man died after he picked up an object, believed to be a hand grenade, at the Varby gard station in Huddinge.

"These two people cycled past the object and stopped to see what was on the ground".

"We're suspecting that it's a hand grenade of some sort", Lars Alvarsjo, chief of Stockholm's southern police district, told the Swedish national broadcaster SVT.

"It is too early to say".

Numerous illegal hand grenades found in Sweden are being imported from former Yugoslav nations, he said.

Police cordoned off the station and the square where the blast happened as the bomb squad moved in to investigate.

Sven-Erik Olsson of the Stockholm police told reporters that he could not say what kind of explosive material was used or how powerful the explosion was, only that it was "powerful enough for the couple to be taken to hospital".

The explosion occurred late on Sunday morning at the Varby Gard station, in Stockholm's south-west.
