UN appeals for nearly $3bn aid for Yemen

Saudi blockade of Yemen set to resume after brief respite

The Saudi coalition in Yemen said on Saturday it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Iran-affiliated Houthi militias towards Najran City.

The coalition also said it would "increase the capacities of Yemeni ports to receive humanitarian" imports, as it faces mounting criticism for imposing a crippling blockade on the country.

Last week, Saudi Arabia deposited $2bn in Yemen's central bank after the government appealed for help to save the country's currency from collapse and prevent a starvation.

"The coalition will coordinate".

The new aid programme aims to boost monthly imports to 1.4 million metric tonnes from 1.1 million past year, the statement added.

A statement said the coalition would also help expand the capacities of Yemeni ports to boost imports of aid and cargo to 1.4m tonnes annually, up from 1.1m previous year.

The coalition pledged up to $40-million for the expansion of ports to accommodate additional aid shipments.

Since 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has conducted an aerial bombing campaign over Yemen, aimed at countering the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and supporting the government of President Abd-Mansour Hadi.

British MPs to vote on Brexit bill
Labour is expected to oppose this evening's vote, but without a Tory rebellion, it's expected to pass this stage. He said opposition benches try to make changes to the bill had been "talking to a brick wall".

Saudi Arabia last week deposited $2 billion in Yemen's central bank to prop up the currency and ease hunger.

More than 10,000 people have been killed and three million displaced in Yemen's civil war.

Another almost 2 200 Yemenis have died of cholera amid deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions, the World Health Organisation says.

The $2.96-billion will be used to respond to an ever-broadening crisis in Yemen, where war, looming starvation and cholera have killed thousands and put millions of lives at risk.

Launched Sunday, the 2018 Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan is the largest consolidated humanitarian appeal for Yemen - where over two years of relentless conflict has left three quarters of the population in need of humanitarian assistance, including 11.3 million in acute need who urgently require assistance to survive.

While stressing that Yemeni children are bearing the brunt of what it referred to as the "the worst diphtheria outbreak for a generation", the group noted that at least 52 people, mostly children under 15, have been killed by the disease.

The coalition pledged funding of 40 million US dollars for the expansion of ports to accommodate additional humanitarian shipment, adding that it would set up an air corridor between Riyadh and the central Yemeni province of Marib to run multiple aid flights of C130 cargo planes.
