Update patches cause reboots in newer processing chips, too

Adobe Flash Player Security Update Following Vulnerabilities on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1

Intel had said last week that it had received reports that its security patches were causing problems in systems with its older Broadwell and Haswell chips.

The process of patching computer processors vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre threats is encountering a few bumps in the road. "But we have more work to do".

Intel said that it had replicated these issues in internal testing, and that it's making progress in terms of identifying the precise cause.

To prevent further damage, the chipmaker has updated its original Meltdown-Spectre advisory, asking OEMs and cloud providers to first test its beta silicon microcode updates before the final release.

New York Giants Rumors: Pat Shurmur now 'the top choice'
The Colts still would have a vacancy, though, and while Wilks has not interviewed with that team, he could be a late candidate. NY owns the No. 2 pick in April's NFL Draft and is expected to select a quarterback to serve as Eli Manning's heir.

The Spectre/ Meltdown issue is penetrating all through the computer industry as affected hardware OEMs are pushing out patches continuously, while wrongdoers attempt to take benefit out of it. Zen-based CPUs Threadripper and Ryzen from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

And the bad news did not stop there, as Navin Shenoy, general manager of Intel's data centre group, confirmed that patches for the security flaws can cause higher-than-expected reboot rates in Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake and Kaby Lake processors. Intel said it has now updated 90 percent of affected Intel CPUs introduced within the past five years. As for the Spectre and Meltdown patches, more benchmarks will likely be coming down the pipeline soon, so stay tuned. Microsoft said that PCs running Windows 10 on newer silicon (2016-era PCs with Skylake, Kabylake or newer CPU) will see single-digit slowdowns and most users will not notice it because these percentages are reflected in milliseconds. Lisa Su says that their processors are as good as Intel processors. "Generally speaking, the workloads that incorporate a larger number of user/kernel privilege changes and spend a significant amount of time in privileged mode will be more adversely impacted". "If you look at our Ryzen product line, for example, at every price point we offer more threads, more multithreaded performance", she added.

On Jan. 10, I provided initial performance data results for client systems and today I have initial results to share on the data center side. Intel's stress tests - which, in this case, means a 100% write case - showed an 18% decrease in performance, though switching to a 70/30 read/write model improved things drastically, bringing the performance hit up to 2%.

Google last week urged the whole industry to adopt Retpoline because it mitigated the attack but had nearly no negative performance impact on current hardware.
