USA issues new sanctions on Iran over missiles

US faces criticism at Security Council meeting on Iran protests

Envoys from several other countries including China expressed reservations about whether the council was the right place to debate the issue.

At least 21 people have been killed and hundreds arrested amid the anti-government protests and unrest over the country's economic woes.

Lawmaker Mahmoud Sadeghi said that around 90 university students- 58 of them in the capital Tehran- have been detained since protests broke out, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported Saturday.

But Russia and Iran complained tartly that the US was dragging a council focused on worldwide security into what they called a domestic matter.

US President weighed in on protests in Saturday, warning that the country's people want change and 'oppressive regimes can not endure forever'.

At Friday rallies in Iran, pro-government demonstrators chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel".

A United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday to discuss the protests turned into criticism of the United States for requesting to meet on what some member states said was an internal issue for Iran.

Specifically, Tesla is now aiming to manufacture 5,000 Model 3 units per week by the end of June. The company said Model 3 deliveries to non-employee customers, "are now accelerating rapidly".

France's ambassador to the United Nations told the meeting that recent protests in Iran do not threaten worldwide peace and security.

This could all change if the mass demonstration in the country continues and the Iranian authorities resort to clearly systematic, oppressive and brutal methods to deal with them.

But France's ambassador, Francois Delattre, urged caution, saying the council should act "with all the vigilance required, guarding against any exploitation of this crisis, which would only reinforce the extremes". He pointed out that Trump has a history of making "belligerent" comments about Iran.

"One U.S. resident took to social media to order the killing of our security forces ... as well as their families, in their homes".

The president's tweets have not called for violence or disruptive acts, but he has commended them. "As the Iranian people suffer, their government and the IRGC fund foreign militants, terrorist networks, and human rights abuses".

The Security Council "rebuffed the U.S.' naked attempt to hijack its mandate", Mr. Zarif wrote on Twitter. Due to the Trump administration, it's not only watching, it's also acting. "It is a powerful exhibition of fearless people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protest". The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.
