2 students shot inside LA school, student suspect arrested

Two students shot at Salvador Castro Middle School one in critical condition. Suspect in custody

A gunshot that went off in a Los Angeles middle school classroom on Thursday, hitting two students, was accidentally discharged from inside a girl's backpack, Los Angeles police said Friday.

Police described the shooting at the Westlake-area school as "not intentional,", saying the girl in custody did not plan to shoot when she brought the firearm to campus.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the students, teachers, staff, and the entire community at Sal Castro Middle School and the Los Angeles Unified School District", he wrote.

The 15-year-old boy was shot in the temple and is "extremely lucky" that the bullet missed vital structures, doctors say.

"They thought it was a toy gun, but then it shot", Urbina said.

Authorities affirmed that the incident was unintentional, pointing out that the two students, a boy and a girl, sustained serious head and wrist injuries and were transferred to hospital. Both victims are 15 years old. The 12-year-old girl arrested for the incident at Sal Castro Middle School is being charged with negligent discharge of a firearm.

Diego Salinas had just dropped off his 12-year-old sister and was stunned when she called minutes later to say there had been a shooting.

Pentagon acknowledges Russian Federation is developing a 'doomsday' nuclear-armed torpedo
The document argues that by developing USA nuclear responses, it raises the Russian threshold for using the weapons, rather than lowering the United States threshold.

"I'm kind of afraid for my safety", said Oswaldo Gonzalez, 11, a sixth-grader at the middle school.

When he finally responded, he told her they were still on lockdown and said the shooting had happened inside a seventh-grade classroom.

The shooting was reported to authorities around 8:55 a.m. Thursday. The girl asked him to hide the weapon after the shooting.

On Friday morning, anxious parents accompanied their children to the school as classes resumed. Police still don't know where she got the unregistered gun.

The child is represented by an attorney and has not spoken to detectives, he said. A month later, a student died from a shooting at Reseda High School.

The enrollment is 92 percent Latino, and most students are from low-income families.

However, an audit last April of 20 schools found that some schools failed to do the searches daily and that a quarter of them didn't have the right metal-detecting wands.
