Closed-door trial of Palestinian teen opens

Tamimi's family has said that she struck the two soldiers outside her West Bank home in frustration after having just learned that Israeli troops seriously wounded a 15-year-old cousin, shooting him in the head from close range with a rubber bullet during nearby stone-throwing clashes.

United Nations human rights experts* have expressed alarm over the case of Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi who, after an incident in which she slapped an Israeli soldier, appeared before an Israeli military court today. Later that day, Ahed confronted Israeli soldiers when they forced themselves into the courtyard of her family's home.

Defense lawyer Gaby Lasky said she considers the court as an organ of what she described as an "illegal occupation" and that the indictment must be thrown out.

The statement from Amnesty International goes on to note that Tamimi's detention is not unique and that the Israeli army now has roughly 350 Palestinian children in custody and is "subjecting them to ill-treatment, including blindfolding, threats, solitary confinement and interrogations without the presence of their lawyers or family members". The experts called for her release during the proceedings and that future hearings be held in strict accordance with global legal standards.

"13 de febrero de 2018, 16:44United Nations, Feb 13 (Prensa Latina) UN human rights" experts were alarmed today over the imprisonment of Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi, after an incident with Israeli occupying forces, and demanded her prompt release.

In what rights groups and her lawyer said they suspected was a deliberate effort to try to prevent that, the military judge ejected all journalists and observers from the first trial hearing on Tuesday. "So the way to keep it out of everybody's eyes is to close doors and not allow people inside the court for her hearing".

Ms Tamimi, who turned 17 while in detention, has become an icon for the Palestinian struggle against Israel's occupation of the West Bank. For Palestinians, the young teen is a symbol of resistance to Israeli occupation, but many Israelis regard her as a violent troublemaker seeking publicity.

She has been charged with 12 counts including assault and could face a lengthy jail term if convicted. The military said in a statement that it is charging Nariman Tamimi with using Facebook to "incite others to commit terrorist attacks". She was arrested for slapping an IDF soldier.

"The court made a decision to close the doors [to the trial] because they claim that it is in Ahed's best interest". Instead, she herself was arrested.

Mira Regev's reaction to the Tamimi video clip situates the Israeli reaction to Ahed Tamimi's in ways that seem to reflect the dominant mood in the country that perversely reverses the realities of oppressor and oppressed, victimizers and victims: "When I watched that I felt humiliated".

In the court hearing that was held behind closed doors, the judge chose to extend the detention of the 17-year-old girl until March 11 without giving further details. Her 28-year-old cousin died after being hit by a tear-gas canister a year earlier, he says.

Worldwide human rights groups have criticized the aggressive prosecution, and diplomats from the European Union and several European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, attended Tuesday's hearing as observers before they were kicked out along with journalists.

Senior Israeli government officials called for a harsh punishment.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Israel has ratified, states that minors can only be deprived of liberty as a last resort and for the shortest appropriate time, said Michael Lynk, a United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, in a statement.
