Explosion at mosque in Libya's Benghazi kills 2, injures 75

Bomb rocks Libya's Benghazi mosque

The blasts took place during Friday prayers, residents said.

One person was killed and 37 wounded by a twin bombing inside a mosque in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Friday, medics said.

Mr Agouri said the bombs were planted in separate rooms inside the mosque.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

"This heinous act should not provide a justification for revenge attacks".

On January 23, two vehicle bombs exploded outside a mosque, killing at least 34 people, including children, and injuring 90 others.

"Direct or indiscriminate attacks against civilians are prohibited under global humanitarian law and constitute war crimes", UNSMIL said in a post on Twitter.

The LNA, led by Commander Khalifa Haftar, a likely aspirant in the upcoming Libyan elections is attempting to restore stability in the region and has made a pledge to stop the anarchy that ensued after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, seven years ago.

The battles have left large swaths of the port city in ruins.

The explosions hit the mosque at the start of weekly prayers in Libya's second city, which lies 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) east of Tripoli, a security source told AFP.

Haftar, a possible contender in national elections that could be held by the end of 2018, has built his reputation on delivering stability in Benghazi and beyond, promising to halt the anarchy that ensued after a NATO-backed uprising ended Moammar Gadhafi's rule almost seven years ago. The country has been since split between rival governments and militias.
