Israel strikes Gaza after blast wounds four soldiers

This story continues below

At least four Israeli soldiers were injured when a patrol was hit in an IED explosion in the Gaza Strip.

Sirens were sounded as an Israeli home was reportedly hit by a rocket fired from Gaza.

The IDF also warned Hamas that it was "responsible for the event and its consequences and for everything that occurs in the Gaza Strip above and below ground".

18 Hamas targets were struck by IDF forces Saturday night said the IDF spokesperson, among these targets were two Hamas outposts and means to manufacture weapons.

In a separate incident, an IDF tank opened fire on a group of Palestinians approaching the border in a "suspicious manner", the army said.

Two Palestinians were injured in the raids, Palestinian medical sources said.

Israeli fighter jets attacked terrorist targets in Gaza overnight Saturday, in response to recent terrorist attacks, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said in a statement.

But he insisted that "from our point of view Hamas is responsible" and said the explosive had been planted during a protest arranged by the group on Friday.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion, but army spokesman Jonathan Conricus blamed the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas for the blast, in remarks on Twitter. "We will respond appropriately", Netanyahu stated regarding the attack, followed by the IDF retaliatory strikes. The Hamas-run health ministry said at least two people were wounded.

Following the incident, an Israeli tank fired at an observation post located in the area.

Hamas and Israel have fought three wars since 2008, and the last conflict in 2014 was waged in part over tunnels from Gaza that were used to launch attacks. The border area has generally been quiet since the war, but has seen an increase in violence since President Donald Trump's announcement in December recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Netanyahu will visit the White House next month, a senior U.S. administration official told AFP on Friday.
