Italy migrant shootings motivated by 'racial hatred'

BREAKING NEWS: Four people are injured as gunman opens fire from a car in Italy

The suspect Luca Traini, who has no previous criminal record, was detained about two hours after the shooting rampage began from inside a black Alfa Romeo in Macerata.

Local media said that the alleged gunman got out of his vehicle and climbed the steps of a war monument and made a fascist salute before he was arrested, according to local media and Ansa.

Images posted on the website of the Italian newspaper il Resto di Carlino show Traini with an Italian flag draped over his shoulders as he was apprehended by police.

Police officials said those who had been injured were of "foreign nationality" and that they had been taken to the hospital where one had to undergo surgery, Efe news reported. Reports said at least one woman was among the wounded.

Local media said the shooting appears to be racially motivated and the mayor of Macerata, the town in the region of Marche some 200 kilometers northeast of Rome, has urged local residents to stay indoors. He refused to talk to the police after his arrest.

It follows the murder of an 18-year-old Italian woman in the city with a Nigerian man suspected of the killing.

The Italian police gave a chase to the auto and later caught the gunman while the passenger has fled and the police were trying to trace him.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has temporarily suspended campaigning over the shootings.

"Everything that happened between the death of Pamela and today was fanning the flames of hate between people", said Carancini, of the center-left Democratic Party, in an interview.

League leader Matteo Salvini distanced himself from the shooting, but blamed mass immigration for the tensions.

Her body was found on Wednesday and a preliminary postmortem could not immediately identify the cause of death.

"Stay at home until further notice".

"What was this maggot still doing in Italy?".

He was allegedly found to be carrying a gun when he was arrested.

Opinion polls suggest a centre-right bloc, including the Northern League, Forza Italia and the far-right Brothers of Italy, will win the most seats but not a working majority.
