Kenyan broadcasters back on air after government block

Failure to obey court orders has consequences Maraga tells govt amidst Miguna drama

Kenyan police fired teargas on Monday to disperse 100 demonstrators demanding that the government reopen three private television channels it shut down on over their coverage of the opposition.

The unprecedented act of censorship sparked a local and worldwide backlash against the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta, who won an election in October.

THE Kenyan government has come under criticism for disobeying a court order to lift a ban on television stations that broadcast the mock swearing in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as president. Citizen TV, which was also shut down last week, remained off-air.

The government was not served with the court order on Thursday afternoon because of a delay at the court registrar's office, Okiya Omtatah, an activist who filed the High Court case and won the lifting of the suspension, told Reuters. The United States, the United Nations and former colonial ruler Britain strongly criticised the government's censorship. "If not they'll (the government) be in contempt of court". A spokesman for the government was not available for comment. Only two major broadcasters - NTV and KTN - are partially back on air nearly a week after their signals were shut down by the government.

This sentencing closes weeks of courageous and heartbreaking victim impact statements from Nassar's victims and their families. Assistant Attorney General Angela Povilaitis, in her closing argument, reminded the judge how far-reaching Nassar's abuse was.

Odinga, presidential candidate for the leading opposition coalition, NASA, rejected Uhuru Kenyatta's victory in the country's presidential election, after a court ordered a rerun of the August 8 election.

The Supreme Court later nullified the election on procedural grounds and Kenyatta won a repeat poll after Odinga boycotted it, claiming it would not be fair.

Since the symbolic inauguration, Odinga and his supporters have repeatedly promised to outline their next step, only to postpone the unveiling of their plan. At least one other opposition figure has been arrested.

Around 100 people were killed during the protracted election season, majority Odinga supporters shot by the police. Miguna Miguna was taken from his Nairobi home to a police station, the NASA coalition wrote on its Twitter feed.
