Montenegro attack not part of ongoing threat

Suicide Bomber Throws Explosive at US Embassy in Montenegro (No Ratings Yet) Loading...

The U.S. State Department confirmed late on February 22 that Jaukovic was opposed to Montengro's membership of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as well as pro-Western political leaders in Montenegro.

"The US embassy in Podgorica advises US citizens there is an active security situation at the US embassy in Podgorica", it said on its website.

Many reports describe the weapon Janukovic used as a "grenade", but that might be used as a generic term for a thrown explosive device, rather than indicating it was a military-issue hand grenade.

Portalanalitika said the motive for the attack was not yet known.

It also published a picture, apparently from his Facebook page, showing an award he won for his service in the Yugoslav army in 1999, which was signed by the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

Montenegro borders the Adriatic Sea in southeastern Europe and its capital is Podgorica.

Pakistan survives placement on FATF watchlist
Pakistan foreign minister Khawaja M Asif had earlier tweeted from Moscow that Pakistan had won a reprieve of three months but the relief was short-lived.

Many in Montenegro remain opposed to the country's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation membership because of the air war the alliance waged to stop the war in Kosovo when Montenegro was still part of Yugoslavia.

The building in Podgorica was not damaged and no one else was injured, according to a State Department spokesman. "Immediately before, the person threw an explosive device from the intersection near the Sport Center into the US Embassy compound", read a tweet on the government's official Twitter account.

Police sources said Janukovic had Montenegrin citizenship and no criminal record.

The embassy warned U.S. citizens to stay away from the area until further notice and told them to monitor local media for updates.

Police sealed off the area around the embassy after the explosion.
