Prostate cancer overtakes breast cancer to become the third biggest cancer killer

Chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer may increase heart failure risk

Doctors at the American Heart Association warned that some breast cancer treatment may save lives, but increase the risks of heart disease. Breast cancer survivors-especially those aged 65 and up-are actually more likely to die from CVD complications than another bout of cancer.

Mehta adds that this statement does not aim to discourage patients from agreeing to breast cancer therapies but help them make informed decisions regarding the best treatment for them.

HER-2 directed therapies are created to combat particularly aggressive forms of breast cancer, but the treatments might be doing more harm than good, research has found.

In most cases, however, the absolute risk is fairly low, said Dr. Laxmi Mehta, director of the Women's Cardiovascular Health Program at Ohio State University and lead author of the AHA's statement, which was published in the journal Circulation. In addition, cardiovascular health can affect cancer treatment selection, since some types can result in heart damage.

The researchers enrolled 537 patients with newly diagnosed early-stage breast cancer on the study.

Some studies suggest that administering common chemotherapy therapies in new ways may reduce heart disease risks. In some patients, the reduction in heart function is temporary.

Doctors will study samples of your tissue to see how likely the cancerous cells are to spread - and help you decide which treatment is most appropriate for you.

China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be part of the country again, but many Taiwanese want a separate nation.

Other treatments, such as radiation, can damage heart arteries and cause the development of coronary artery disease or blockages. Some breast cancer treatment agents, such as anthracyclines, can result in abnormal heart rhythms that in some patients are benign but in others can lead to life-threatening heart rhythms.

"Treatment-related mortality [from heart disease] is not reliably captured in breast-cancer mortality", said Dr. H. Gilbert Welch of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. That's because the risk of developing a heart problem is lifelong with some of the treatments. Healthcare providers should monitor a woman's heart health before, during and after breast cancer treatment.

"Most people with breast cancer fear death from breast cancer". As much as 80% of attributable risk for CVD can be eliminated by attention to modifiable risk factors, including a healthy diet, abstinence from tobacco, maintenance of a healthy weight, blood pressure control, a favorable lipid profile, diabetes management, and physical activity.

"We are still recommending that patients do get their breast cancer treatment".

At the heart of the issue is that many women believe breast cancer poses a bigger risk than heart disease. She said that a breast cancer patient who goes through chemo for three or four months loses 30 percent of her fitness, gains 10 pounds and ages the equivalent of 20 years.

It highlights the need to prevent and treat heart disease in patients with breast cancer and emphasises the importance of cardiologists and oncologists working together to optimise the health of cancer patients.

"The introduction of precision medicine, a screening programme and a weighty research boost has no doubt played an important role in reducing the number of women who die from the disease".
