Rebel areas pounded by Syrian forces despite cease-fire call

Israel regards the Iran-backed Hezbollah, which is fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as the biggest threat it faces on its borders.

The bloodshed came a day after another 31 civilians were killed in Eastern Ghouta and as the United Nations pleaded for a truce in the seven-year-old war to allow for aid deliveries.

In a statement Paulo Pinheiro said the spiralling violence in Syria had made "a mockery of the so-called "de-escalation zones" - an agreement past year between Russia, Iran, and Turkey to stabilise the lines of conflict and open corridors for urgently needed humanitarian relief.

There has also been a spike in the number of reports of attacks by the government using chlorine as a chemical weapon, prompting warnings from the United States to the Syrian government to desist and to Russian Federation to pressure its ally to halt the attacks.

In a separate investigation, experts in war crimes and violations of the laws of war under global law said that they were conducting a series of investigations regarding bomb reports that had been made using chlorine gas which is outlawed.

- Idlib: Military operations in what is one of the last rebel-held stronghold have resulted in increased casualties and the movement of civilians - about 1.2 million out of 2.4 million civilians have been internally displaced.

Rescuers from the White Helmets organization could be seen rushing shredded bodies covered in white dust to ambulances hurtling down streets littered with rubble.

"This was the highest civilian toll in Syria in almost nine months, and one of the bloodiest days for Eastern Ghouta in several years", Abdel Rahman told AFP.

In Geneva, the UN-mandated "Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic" issued a statement on Tuesday, condemning the "scale and ferocity" of regime attacks in Idlib governorate and eastern Ghouta, including the bombing of three hospitals.

Regime forces targeted "areas from which the shells were launched in Eastern Ghouta, inflicting heavy losses upon the armed groups' ranks and destroying a number of their mortar launchers", the state-run SANA news agency said.

Several schools in Damascus announced they were suspending classes for the next few days due to the upsurge in violence.

Chlorine is suspected of having been used on two occasions this month alone on Eastern Ghouta.

"And I said, look, you have your interests in Syria, and we have our interest, which is not to be attacked by Iran and its proxies from the soil of Syria either directly or through the provision of offensive weapons, very deadly weapons that are filtered through Syria into Lebanon to a warfront that Iran is building in Lebanon", he added.

So far, more than 340,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, which began in 2011 with anti-government protests that then morphed into a brutal civil war.

The punishing campaign by the Syrian government and its ally, Russia, has also battered the northwestern province of Idlib, the largest area under opposition control in Syria.

This is not the first time the Syrian government is accused of using chemical attacks that have killed civilians.

Earlier Monday, the U.S. accused Russian Federation of blocking a UN Security Council statement condemning Sunday's alleged chemical attack in Idlib. In rebel-held Idlib, at least six people are reported to have died in the violence.

A third accusation of toxic gas use came from Idlib, an opposition-controlled province in the country's northwest that also falls in a de-escalation zone. At least three hospitals or health facilities were hit in the strikes, which recall some of the worst periods of the war.
