Air strikes kill nine civilians in Yemen

The U.N. Security Council, instead, unanimously adopted a Russian-proposed resolution that did not mention Iran, Al Jazeera wrote.

France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and United States issued a joint statement late on February 27 saying that Iran's failure to comply with the arms embargo, as determined by a panel of UN experts last month, "poses serious risks to peace and stability in the region".

The four nations implored Iran "to immediately cease all activities that are inconsistent with or would violate the terms" of the 2015 U.N. Security Council resolution about the arms embargo.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, an global advisor to Iranian Parliament Speaker, says Al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorists have expanded their presence in southern Yemen, which is mostly controlled by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

On Monday, Russia blocked in the UN Security Council a Britain-drafted resolution, which slammed Iran's "non-compliance" with the UN sanctions regime that embargoes arms to the Shiite Houthi militants in Yemen.

In a bid to win Moscow's support, the draft that was vetoed had been weakened to simply "note with particular concern" the violation, which was reported to the council by United Nations experts monitoring sanctions.

All four of the Western powers were party to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal along with Russian Federation and China.

Medics and a Reuters photographer who saw the wreckage in Saada said an initial air strike destroyed a house in the outlying Sohar district of the city, the main stronghold of the Houthis who control much of northern Yemen.

The Western powers said that the move by the Huthis to fire missiles into Saudi Arabia "has the potential to turn a local conflict into a broader regional one".

The four countries also called on all parties involved to comply with worldwide humanitarian and human rights law, to continue allowing humanitarian aid to enter, and to return to peace talks.

The civil war has been devastating on the civilians, as thousands have been killed and millions more are in dire need of aid.

Air strikes killed nine civilians and wounded at least six on Wednesday in two separate attacks in north and west Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition fighting against the Houthi movement, residents said.

In January, Donald Trump vowed to re-impose US sanctions on Iran unless the deal was amended to fix its major flaws.
