Amazon buys Ring, a billion dollars serious about IoT

Inc. has agreed to buy connected-doorbell startup Ring Inc. for about $1 billion, a person familiar with the matter said.

Moreover, in October it launched a service in the USA called Amazon Key that allows couriers to deliver items inside homes. While checks would presumably be in place, there's the added peace of mind that the Amazon Key system could integrate Ring doorbells to complete those checks before unlocking the consumer's front door.

A Ring spokesperson said in a statement that "Ring is committed to our mission to reduce crime in neighborhoods by providing effective yet affordable home security tools to our neighbors" and that it will be able to achieve "even more" by partnering with a company like Amazon.

Amazon is buying Ring, a maker of smart doorbells, to help the e-commerce giant expand its home security and in-house delivery services, according to Geekwire. "Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter feels that the deal could help Amazon revolutionize home security". In June, Ring announced they'd figured out how to connect select devices to work with Alexa on Echo Show and Fire TV.

The company's Alexa voice assistant works with Ring gadgets. As when it bought Twitch in 2014, Amazon is expected to keep Ring running as-is, meaning the brand and its products are sticking around. At the time of that announcement, Amazon unveiled a Cloud Cam product that essentially is an indoor security camera. Echoes allow customers to control thermostats, cameras, doorlocks, lights and other connected devices (among hundreds of other functions).

The Screen SoundCasting Technology sends vibrations through the display without the need for a traditional loudspeaker. Nevertheless, hands-on videos of the Apex seem to have a generally positive reaction to Vivo's implementation.

Google, one of Amazon's biggest rivals, is also an increasingly important player in home automation and security, with its Nest thermostats and security cameras.

Amazon's Alexa Fund, which invests in companies working on voice technology, contributed to Ring previous year.

Amazon has recently focused extensively on just Alexa, the highly popular home speaker that is also an artificial intelligence device with the ability to answer questions as well as make purchases on Amazon. Amazon is believed to have paid around $1.1 billion for the Santa Monica-based company.

In a 2017 ABC special, the Shark Tank judges reflected on the deals they most regretted missing out on, and "Doorbot"-now Ring-was one of the first ideas mentioned".
