Daylight-saving Time: Change your clocks, check your batteries

Spring forward and check your smoke detector battery

It's time to spring forward, which means changing your clocks over the weekend, but it's also a good time to check your smoke detectors.

"In addition to changing batteries, now is a good time to make sure to create or update your fire safety plan", the fire marshal said in a news release.

"Equally important is installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms, which are also critical in protecting life". The program urges all Americans to change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries when setting clocks forward. Look for the manufacturer's expiration date on the back or side of the alarm. "So if you keep them changed, you don't have to worry about them chirping", he said. Experts say the best configuration includes one alarm on each floor of the house and inside sleeping areas.

In case of fire, call 9-1-1 once you are safely outside your home.

Emergency officials recommend all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be tested at least once a month.
