Google's New YouTube Stories feature Now Allows Users to Change the Background

Images of You Tube Stories a new feature rolling out

Google uses machine learning in its video segmentation technology, which can determine background imagery that can be replaced with something amusing or eye-catching.

The app, created with the use of artificial intelligence capable of doing it on the fly, bypassing the need to use green screen and other sophisticated devices.

This feature is in beta phase and is rolled out to limited number of people yet. Now, a beta feature is rolling out to a limited group of YouTube Stories users which lets creators swap out their background images with nothing more than a phone. With the Pixel 2 already featuring an AI-powered portrait mode for photos, it's easy to see Google implementing this technology for mobile video capture.

Google, though, trained a neural network with lots of carefully labeled imagery that helped it learn how to distinguish facial features - eyes, hair, glasses, mouths and so on - from everything else.

Syrians flee violence as regime seizes quarter of eastern Ghouta
No civilians have exited through a humanitarian corridor set up by Russian Federation and the Assad regime almost a week ago. But on Saturday, it said that 18 civilians, including three children, had been killed in regime bombardment of the region.

The new segmentation technology will allow creators to replace and modify the background, effortlessly increasing videos' production value without specialised equipment, Google's research blog noted. Having 3D scene data, for example extracted from newer iPhones' twin cameras, makes the process only a little easier.

Don't you just hate it when you want to shoot a quick video, but you can't find a decent background to use? Unlike many online publications, we don't have a paywall or run banner advertising, because we want to keep our journalism open, without influence or the need to chase traffic. The green screen is still significant to filmmaking. In some cases, edges are filled with ugly halos along with other anomalies, notes TechTimes. As a result, the AI's background replacement quality not quite on par with a green screen, but Google's technique does not require editing skills or extra work. Furthermore, it's still not certain what the requirements look like for this tech to work.

The Real-time Video Segmentation tool is another new feature for YouTube, which recently added a dark theme to the platform. Although the roll-out started last month, the option to download YouTube videos didn't appear in more than several countries. This app is rather similar to apps like Snapchat and Instagram, in terms of function.
