Gov. Scott in Tampa to discuss $500 million school-safety improvement plan

Gov. Scott details $500 million plan to keep students safe

The governor's proposal comes after emergency meetings Scott organized with law enforcement, school administrators, teachers, mental health experts and state agency leadership, as well as meetings the governor hosted with Stoneman Douglas High School students.

"The city will do its part to make sure that our children are safe", Curry said.

Governor Rick Scott says his goal is to make these changes as early as next Friday.

"I like seeing the kids going to school, like seeing kids alive and moving on with their lives, getting back to learning", Andrew Pollack said. Active shooter training would also be required, and an increase of funding would be allocated toward efforts to make schools more resilient to mass shootings, like adding metal detectors, bulletproof glass, steel doors, and upgraded locks.

Williams said his staff will be focused on keeping weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill and adding officers or professional security at every public school.

On the mental health side, the plan includes tighter gun purchase restrictions for people committed for observation under the states Baker Act, and it would prohibit people from possessing or purchasing a firearm if they are targets of a court injunction for protection against the threat of violence. "'You're going to have to teach them, that even though they're safe at their house, they're going to have to think about being safe at their school'". "Im more in favor of having trained law enforcement at the school than I am putting another task on school teachers". He believes there is more that can be done, starting with mandatory insurance on firearms.

Oil falls for third day as higher inventories, dollar weigh
The U.S.net oil imports hover close to or under three mbp, whereas in 2006 the United States imported over twelve mbp. Despite the drop in prices today, both benchmarks are trading up from this same time last week.

Gov. Scott also said a couple of times that he does not want to arm teachers, but instead focus on getting mentally ill students the help they need.

Outside Wednesday's event, a group gathered to protest Scott's new plan.

Inside the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, he stood in front of a line of officials across the state: Sheriffs, police chiefs, commissioners and superintendents were present in the backdrop as Scott highlights the significant changes.

Despite his issues with some of the governor's ideas, Heberlein agrees with him on the opposition to arming teachers.

Before moving forward with the plan, Scott says it has to be something that everyone involved feels is doable.

"I asked educators to come to Tallahassee to answer, 'what do you think we need to be doing?,'" he said.
