House passes school safety bill

House Of Representatives Easily Passes Bill To Address School Violence

"Today, as students across the country are marching for change by walking out of their classrooms, I think it was appropriate for the House, with my support, to pass this bipartisan bill, because if there is one place students should feel safe, it is at school", Rep. John Curtis said.

Seventeen people were killed on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. when a gunman opened fire at the school.

The STOP School Violence Act of 2018 would provide grant funding for evidence-based training to prevent school violence.

The bill passed easily, by a margin of 407-10.

The #STOP School Violence Act passed by the House might be the only action Republicans agree to in response to the recent school shootings.

The House passed legislation on December 6 - the Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which reformed the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and allowed gun owners with concealed carry permits from one state to carry them in another.

The chilling details of his alleged plot laid out in a police affidavit - together with a national movement to tighten gun laws in the wake of a mass shooting in Florida - has prompted a flurry of gun legislation.

Heller said the bill assures "Nevada's kids - and their parents - that we are committed to supporting a coordinated effort to stop school violence".

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R- Utah, who helped introduce the Senate version of the bill, hailed the House passage Wednesday, and said on Twitter "Now let's pass it in the Senate!" This includes training for law enforcement, school staff and student to identify threats to themselves or others, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Willsboro, a co-sponsor of the legislation. The focus of the new bill is to provide funding for training and programs to prevent school violence. "Clearly, there are more things that need to be done, but this is one of those things that actually gets to the heart of addressing the problem to stop school violence before a tragedy happens".

"The bill is staying on the Speaker's desk unless and until they negotiate with the House", he said, indicating Speaker Paul Ryan, who controls what bills the House will consider, supports Hensarling's position.

It was supported by Sandy Hook Promise, the organization that grew out of the elementary school killing of 20 first graders and six adults. Nadler, who voted in favor of the bill, further warned the legislation lacks due process protections for students against whom a report is made.

"The FBI could have and should have done more to investigate the information it was provided prior to the shooting", Acting Deputy Director David Bowdich said.

The FBI has acknowledged it mishandled separate tips related to Cruz, in September and again in January.

The background checks bill has stalled in the Senate amid objections from some Republicans and concern by Democrats that it is insufficient. "The Administration is taking immediate action now while also pursuing a long-term strategy to develop the very best and most effective policies for protecting America's schools".
