Iowa state senator Bill Dix caught kissing lobbyist in bar

Who Is Bill Dix? Iowa Senate Majority Leader Stepping Down After Video Surfaces of Him Kissing Statehouse Lobbyist

The move comes after the political blog Iowa Starting Line published on Monday a video that was reported to be of Dix and a female lobbyist kissing in a Des Moines bar.

Sen. Bill Dix, the leader of Iowa's GOP-controlled state Senate, abruptly announced his resignation effective immediately after meeting with Republican colleagues around 1 p.m.

Whitver added in a statement: "I believe he made the right decision for himself and for his district, but most importantly, I believe he made the decision in the best interest of his family".

Dix, who is married and has three children, is the majority leader of the Republican-controlled Iowa Senate.

Throughout the video, the two are very close kissing making out several times. The website said the incident was recorded March 1.

The lobbyist in the video, Lindsey McCune, did not respond to messages by phone and text from The Cedar Rapids Gazette. She did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.

Robert L. Palmer, director of government affairs and legislative counsel said in an email: "We are taking what we believe are appropriate actions, but because this is a personnel matter we can not comment further".

Charles Schneider, R-West Des Moines, who filled in for Dix as the floor leader, calling up bills during Monday's Senate debate.

"Republican senators have an obligation to elect a new leader who will take responsibility for the sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation against former Senate Republican staffer Kirsten Anderson by Republican senators and staff". The ex-employee filed a lawsuit several years ago that claimed she was sacked after reporting misconduct in the workplace that included the use of sexual language.

A year ago she was awarded a $2.1 million settlement for wrongful dismissal.

Earlier Monday, before Dix's resignation, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) told reporters that she was disappointed by the allegations and said she had planned to meet with him.

Dix was not at his Capitol office on Monday, according to the Register, and a spokesman declined to comment on the video.

Today, Dix's seat in the State Senate sat empty before Dix sent his resignation letter listing no reason in the letter for stepping down.

Dix has maintained the ex-staffer was sacked for poor performance.

The Iowa Legislature has since hired a human resources director to oversee harassment complaints at the state Capitol. Before that, he served in Iowa's House of Representatives starting in 1997.
