Maryland's unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2 percent in February

Unemployment

Virginia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down 0.1 percentage point in February to 3.5 percent and was down 0.5 percentage point from a year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate for February was 4.1%, the same level as in January and down from 4.7% in February 2017.

The number of unemployed in February was 95,099, the lowest number since May 2008. As a result, the two statistics may exhibit different monthly trends.

January's gain of 8,000 private sector jobs was also revised down by 900.

Industries adding jobs last month included professional and business services, with 13,200 more positions. Declines in transportation and warehousing, professional and business services and leisure and hospitality offset a gain in trade.

The sectors experiencing job loss were led by a decrease in 6,200 government jobs.

The private service-providing sector, at 3,858,300, added 15,500 jobs. Information, which includes media, lost 400 jobs. That total is still better than the 27,200 reported for a year earlier. Unemployment numbers are from a survey of households and do not reflect eligibility for unemployment insurance.

Job-creation in Wisconsin, however, has lagged the national average for more than six years.

"The construction industry continues to add employees in most of the nation, despite a shortage of workers with construction experience", said AGC's chief economist, Ken Simonson.

Zeller stands by his calculations.

Looking toward the rest of the year, Reaser predicted employers will have a hard time filling jobs, from engineers to roofers. "That means OH had a net gain of zero jobs in 2017". February's over-the-year employment growth was 0.9 percent, which was stronger than the growth of the previous five months.

These are the latest job figures, from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. "That is virtually zero".
