Militants 'Capture District Headquarters' In Afghan Province

World by Web Desk | Published

Fared Bakhtawer, the head of the Farah provincial council, on March 12 said initial reports indicate that some 15 security personnel were killed and wounded in the fighting at the Anardara district headquarters.

A senior official in the province said that reinforcements have reached the area in a bid to push back the fighters.

Afghan officials say government forces have retaken control of a district headquarters in western Afghanistan that was briefly seized by Taliban militants.

Taliban fighters attacked troops assembled to prepare an attack in Bala Buluk district in the night, setting off a fierce battle, officials said.

No civilian casualties have been reported so far in the attack, which comes a day after the Taliban killed seven members of the army and eight policemen in Bala Buluk district in the province.

Rahimi said 56 militants were killed and dozens of others were injured in the air strikes.

The province is a centre of opium cultivation and poppy farmers are often taxed by the Taliban to help fund their fight against security forces. The victims are all members of a single family, he added.

Years have passed since the time when, years into the war, USA military and civilian officials heatedly debated "counterinsurgency" as contrasted with "counterterrorism", distinctions that now seem less than crucial.

At least 22 members of the security forces died in the attack.

In January, the governor of Farah resigned, blaming political interference and corruption.

With the approach of milder spring weather, security officials have said they expect fighting to surge as the Taliban, fighting to drive out worldwide forces and re-impose their version of strict Islamic law, step up pressure.
